POSTCARDS FROM REUNION

We asked for your updates at Spring Reunion 2022…here are your answers!

PAM NOXON ’57
All is well. Getting ready to move to Ottawa in mid-August. Sorry to miss the reunion events but would love to hear all the news. So many happy memories.

BETTY (JOYNT) GLISKY ’62
I have been living in Tucson Arizona for the past 35 years, and retired three years ago from my position as Professor of Psychology at the University of Arizona. I have four kids and 12 grandkids. I will be starting a new volunteer job in the fall, teaching reading to kindergarten through second-grade kids. I guess I’m a teacher at heart!

JAMES JACKSON ’62
On May 8, 2022, I celebrated 57(!) years in ordained Anglican ministry in four different Canadian dioceses, which included ministry in city, rural and First Nation parishes. Twenty-two years of that time were spent as a Hospital Chaplain and Director of Pastoral Care and as a Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Teaching Supervisor at both the Holy Cross Hospital and Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary. This period was combined with part-time weekend interim ministry in seven different parishes in the Diocese of Calgary. Retirement is now what is new with me!

MICHAEL JACKSON ’62
I retired in 2006 after 25 years as chief of protocol of Saskatchewan. I continue to live in Regina with my wife, Helen. We have a blended family of a son and two daughters, and six granddaughters. I am currently president of the Institute for the Study of the Crown in Canada, which started at Massey College in 2005 and held its last conference in the Ignatieff Theatre at Trinity in 2019. My sixth edited or authored book on the Crown appears later this year. Ordained in 1977, I am now the longest-serving deacon in the Anglican Church of Canada, assisting at St. Paul’s Cathedral in Regina. I also keep active doing French-English conference and court interpretation.

JAMES “JIM” LEACH ’62
In looking back over the past 60 years, I can only conclude that I was incredibly fortunate. My wife (Pat Durance, Vic ’59) and I have been married for 54 years. We were blessed with five children and now have 10 grandchildren. Both of us have enjoyed good health, which has enabled us to travel extensively. It has also meant that I was able to work until my late 70s and enjoy not one but two careers, my first with the Foreign Service, and my second as CEO of a think tank focusing on international law and trade policy. In 2017, we retired back home in Ottawa to be closer to our family.

SUSAN MOZIAR ’62
I was the Microcomputer Lab Coordinator in the College of Physical and Engineering Science at the University of Guelph for 25 years until I retired in 2006. During my career, I also worked to increase mental health awareness in my community, and was an active member of the Upper Grand District School Board. In 2017, I received the President’s Award from the Ontario School Boards Association for 27 years of service. These days, I am continuing my genealogical research, recording my discoveries in an autobiography, and enjoying dog training my miniature schnauzer.

JILL REVILLE HILL ’62
After years of buying and selling books, at my B@B and bookshop, at book fairs and literary conferences (yay Jane Austen!) in Canada and all over the U.S., our road trips finally have come to an end. But I am still hanging out with books, this time at a terrific non-profit, all-volunteer organization celebrating its 10th anniversary this year. County Kids Read gives out 500 free children’s books each month to vulnerable children in Prince Edward County.

JOAN (HAWSON) SHEWCHUN ’62
I’m divorced, with one son and two grandchildren. I retired in 2001 from a career in children’s education. My last trips before COVID were to Scotland and California, and my hobbies are bird watching, reading and cycling. I’m hoping for more things to open up—I miss concerts and plays but am going out a bit more now, still with a mask. I have arthritis but otherwise am still chugging along!

CLARE CHU STOCKDALE ’67
Two years ago, I was given a Gargi Award by the Hindu Council of Australia in appreciation of my outstanding contribution to women’s sports. This was partly because I was Head of the Athletic Association while I was at St. Hilda’s and won the Frances Endacott Trophy for Women’s Athletics. Last year I won the Golden Quill Award for Public Image/Public Relations for my Rotary Club of Mosman.

JAY ABERNATHY ’72
I retired from full-time ministry in 2015, moving to Greensboro, NC the following year, when my wife, Eileen Schlemmer, retired.

NORMA BETH MICKLEBURGH ’72
After retiring from Foreign Affairs and International Trade (Global Affairs Canada), I attempted to brush up on foreign languages. I recently visited Victoria, the hometown of artists Emily Carr and Bill Reid. Well before the pandemic, I went to Leicester, UK to attend the reinterment of King Richard III at Leicester Cathedral in March 2015.

PAMELA TAYLOR ’72
I am still practicing law, but taking more time to travel and enjoy our home in Provence. In June I’ll be celebrating my 50th anniversary of graduation from Trinity with classmate Christine Adrian-Smith and her husband, who will join us in Saint-Emilion and Bordeaux for the Jurade wine festival.

CATHERINE WEST ’72
I’ve been involved with music education for my whole career, including leadership positions with the Toronto District School Board, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) and the Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM). Currently I’m the Pedagogy Leader at the RCM and a sessional instructor in the Faculty of Music at U of T. I also give workshops and teach courses across Canada and internationally. My work is divided between leadership of the RCM’s research-based early childhood music education program (Smart Start) and facilitating/teaching programs and courses for educators. I married my high school sweetheart, Ian Burgham, and we’re still together after 50 years! We have three wonderful daughters, three wonderful sons-in-law and five and a half (due in September) grandchildren. We live on a lake north of Kingston but have a condo in Toronto for work.

THOMAS DE WOLF ’77
I’m retired and living near Ottawa. Now that things are opening up again, my wife and I hope to spend half the year in Thailand.

JAMIE KER ’77
Our eldest, Kate, has been accepted in the engineering undergrad program at U of T for the fall.

DAVID ROGERS ’77
I’m living near Tewkesbury in Gloucestershire, UK, still gainfully employed as a software project manager for Maersk shipping. I am the proud great uncle to eight great nieces and nephews.

DAN COOPERSTOCK ’78
I am still running Cooperstock Software/Software4Nonprofits.com, providing software for small to mid-sized churches and charities. I am busy with Quakers (mostly on the business side) and Toronto Oasis (secular community group). I’m also enjoying having my motor scooter back out after the winter!

GEOFFREY DREW-BROOK ’82
Life has been busy! I retired from full-time teaching in 2018, and then fully retired in 2019. Maureen and I attempted, unsuccessfully, to live in a condo for five months in 2018-2019 and then bought a farm with our eldest daughter and her husband in June of 2019. Now I am working harder than ever growing chemical-free vegetables including asparagus, callaloo, garlic, herbs, hot peppers, lavender, market greens, and rhubarb. Last September our first grandchild arrived, and we get to see her every day, which is amazing. Our youngest daughter lives and teaches in New Zealand, a country we hope to visit again soon, now that it has reopened to travel.

ANNE LOUISE VEHOVEC ’82
I’m happily retired, grateful for fun with friends, COVID time with family, and stimulating courses and board work.

RANDAL OULTON ’84
I am the author of CooksInfo.com, the largest food encyclopedia on the Internet.

BENITO ROSSITI ’88
I’m living in Canada with my family!

ALEEM BHARMAL ’92
I am humbled and honoured to be assuming the role of Canadian Bar Association, BC Branch President on September 1, 2022.

ELAINE COBURN ’97
After four years in California and then 15 years in France, I moved back to Toronto with my spouse, Matthieu Goetzke, and our three children: Arthur, 18 (completed his first year in Engineering Science at the U of Toronto this May); Marianne, 15; and William, 12. I am the Director of the Centre for Feminist Research at York University, where I am Associate Professor or International Studies and write for the Literary Review of Canada as well as scholarly publications. I still run five days a week.

CECILE POPP ’97
I am living in Adana, Turkey, with my husband and our three boys (aged 12, 10 and seven). After 10+ years teaching English Language Arts at Turkish-American high schools, I moved to the university level. Now I’m on a break and working on a book.

JOHN BURNETT ’02 and KAREN FUNG ’02
We are living in Ottawa with two sons. John is a lawyer working with the National Research Council and Karen is a periodontist.

BEV CHAN ’02
I live in Oakville and enjoy work as a vascular surgeon.

MACIEJ “MARK” KARPINSKI ’02
I live in Ottawa and am working in Research at Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.

CLARENCE LEUNG ’02
I’m working as a Speech Language Pathologist and living in Calgary with my wife and daughter.

JOSEPH MOCANU ’02
After Trinity, I stayed on at UofT to do a PhD in Medical Biophysics, and in 2003 accidentally co-founded a medical device company. After being rejected repeatedly by Toronto-based venture capitalists, I thought that maybe investing was something I’d like to pursue. Fast forward 15 years and a rather squiggly path across three continents as a management consultant, entrepreneur, and angel investor: I started Verge HealthTech Fund (www.verge.fund), the world’s first venture capital fund investing globally in impact-driven healthcare technology startups at their earliest stages.

RYAN STABILE ’02
I’m a lawyer living in Halifax with my wife, Allegra, and our three kids.

JENNIFER TAYNEN ’02
I haven’t lived in Canada for almost 18 years and just moved to Munich with my family. I’m so glad to be able to participate in reunion online from abroad.

ANDREA (BROOKS) WAPPEL ’02
I live in Bradford, Ontario, and am married with 4 children. In time, I plan to resume work as a Registered Dietitian and Public Health Nutritionist (MHSc).

ANDREW FUYARCHUK ’16
This is my first update; there have been several developments since I graduated in 2016. I have shared my research at 14 conferences, including the American Philosophical Association, International Society for Chinese Philosophy, North American Society for Philosophical Hermeneutics, and Media Ecology Association. I have also published six peer-reviewed articles and one book (Lexington). My research is mostly on Hans-Georg Gadamer and the contemporary neo-Confucian philosopher Chung-ying Cheng. However, I recently applied the ideas unearthed from that comparison to Environmental Hermeneutics and have two articles under review with the Journal of Environmental Ethics. Last year I was executive producer of the documentary film, “Turtles of Ontario: A Silent Cry for Help,” and I have been teaching at Yorkville University since 2017. I serve as book review editor for The Journal of Chinese Philosophy, and reviewer for TRANS/FORM/AÇÃO: Revista de Filosofia. I am currently organizing a conference at Yorkville University on Posthumanism and the Environmental Crisis.
