Wedding Corner

This edition of Wedding Corner celebrates 60 years of marriage for Drs. Ruth and Terry Grier.

Who: Ruth (Dowds) Grier ’58 and Terence Grier ’58

When: December 5, 1958

Where: The Trinity College Chapel (of course!)

Who else was there: Best man John Brewin ’58 and bridesmaid Margaret Brewin ’60, and ushers Alex Havrlant ’59 and Derek Hayes ’58.

“When we were at Trinity the chapel was still quite new (completed in 1955) and its beauty and location made it a favourite place for students to have their weddings—as it still is!” says Ruth.

“Because my family did not belong to any parish being recent arrivals from Ireland, and because Terry lived nearby, it was an easy choice. Having the College choir sing at our ceremony was so special and in the photo we are looking up to say ’thank you’ to the choir members.

“After the ceremony we went into the vestry to sign the official papers. It was arranged that when we had finished signing and were ready to walk back down the aisle we were to ring a bell to signal to the organist that we were about to appear. The bell was pushed once, twice, three times and no organ music was to be heard! After a few moments of uncertainty one of our ushers, Alex Havrlant went into the chapel to signal that we were ready for the Wedding March. But of course the guests saw Alex appear and assumed Terry and I would follow so stood up!

Perhaps they wondered if we had changed our minds and not signed the documents! Anyway, the organist got the message, we appeared and all was well.”
