Flavia Elliott received her Bachelor’s degree in Geography from Trinity in 1948. She was the only student at convocation to graduate alongside her mother, who had returned to school part-time and received her own undergraduate degree in the same ceremony. That same day, the younger Elliott was offered a job as an assistant in the Ethnology Department at the Royal Ontario Museum (“I thought I’d died and gone to heaven,” she recalls).

On December 29, 1950, Flavia wed Ernest Redelmeier, a Dutch Air Force pilot turned farmer, in the Trinity College Chapel (now Seeley Hall). She was wearing a remade version of her grandmother’s wedding dress from 1897, with an orange blossom headpiece made by her mother. The couple’s honeymoon was brief (“I was busy studying for my Master’s degree in Anthropology,” she explains, which she completed in 1951). Flavia and Ernest went on to have two sons and four grandchildren.
