PHILIPPA GATES ‘96

Criminalization/Assimilation: Chinese/Americans and Chinatowns in Classical Hollywood Films traces how classic films constructed America’s image of Chinese Americans from their criminalization as unwanted immigrants to their eventual acceptance as assimilated citizens. Gates examines Hollywood’s responses to social issues such as immigration, racism, drug trafficking and prostitution. The book examines racial representations in the first half of the 20th century and brings to light lost and forgotten contributions of Asian-American actors whose presence onscreen offered alternatives to Hollywood’s Orientalist narratives. (Rutgers University Press)
